She was better than me at everything except hiding emotions, though the way she crumbled under strained expression made her all the more endearing to others. I dare say my sister shan't have endured had a stopper been used where it wasn't required, for she carried the burden of our grief in a most feminine manner-sobbing best behind the doors of a room she'd secured for the purpose. Such stoicism on my part came part and parcel; such was the taboo for the eldest to play bereaved daughter in view of the public. I tied the strings of my bonnet and took to the gravel walks of our garden, misplacing my shredded heart like a mourning shawl in summer.

He was better than me at everything except I was much smarter. He was somewhat aware of this and he hated it when he couldn't win an argument. Being the smart one, I was very careful not to show off, but, occasionally, when I got upset, I would go off about how he was being irrational and his reasoning didn't make sense. He would get sulky and say, 'I hate it when you are being smart.'

In a way, I felt like I was the guy and he was the girl in our relationship. He was a better cook, more emotional, more romantic, and definitely better looking. I still don't understand why he wanted to go out with me in the first place. I asked the questions countless times and he always said that he thought I could understand him better than any other girl. Maybe. But, to me, he was puzzling in every kind of way.

If dating me was the most puzzling thing about him, the second would be the reason that he broke up with me. It came out of nowhere. 'Because I was too happy with you,' was his words. I don't understand how anybody can be 'too happy'. I mean, sure, I can understand you can say that figuratively, but, if you are 'too' happy, doesn't it really mean that you are actually not happy? I said this to him. His reply was, 'you are just too smart to understand this.'

He was better than me at everything, except modesty, his grand, earth-shaking schemes always fired with unwavering confidence. When I dared, ever more timidly, to raise a tiny objection relating to – well, to reality, wrath turned his shoulders to stone and struck words from his mouth. How dare I hold him back?

He was better than me at everything, except the awareness that the rules applied to him too. That he couldn't just 'not pay' bills. That being French was no defense from a speeding fine in England. That planes would not wait while he sauntered to the departure gate.

He was better than me at everything, except empathy, the awareness that when bad things happened to me I hurt just as bad as he did when bad things happened to him, and that when bad things happened to him I didn't need reminding how much he hurt to know how much he hurt.

I realised, in the end, that he was better than me at everything, except at loving me. That I could do much better on my own.
